Egret BrochureA few years ago when Chuck Leinweber, Michael Storer, and myself were in Mystic, Ct., building the Quick Canoe Electric at the Wooden Boat Show I was introduced to Ross Miller.  Ross has designed several skin on frame boats and does very nice work and creates plans that even the most inexperienced builder can understand and succeed with.  We discussed his Greenland style kayak and decided to move forward on developing a kit for it

So fast forward.

3We now have a beautiful Skin On Frame Kayak available for you.  The “EGRET” is a nice 17′ Greenland style kayak.  The one I made for myself  weighs in at around 32 pounds.  It is very easy for me to carry with one hand down to the water.

This is a very easy boat to build.  You will need to build you a strong back, which is very easy to do with one sheet of plywood, and from there it is incredibly easy and won’t take you very long at all.5

Our basic kit includes all the bulkheads, stem, and stern which are all made from marine fir plywood.  If you prefer okoume or miranti that is available for additional cost but to be honest, I don’t think that will save much weight considering the small amount of plywood actually used.  Also included is enough 8oz polyester to skin the whole boat, epoxy and silica filler for glueing up the frame, contact cement for attaching the skin, floor boards, and all permanent screws needed for construction of the kit.  The complete building manual and plans are included.  If you already have plans I can reduce the price of the kit to not include them.  I also have some kit specific instructions that will be included.

There is also an optional add on for the kit which includes the carlin and a beautiful mahogany coaming ready to install in the boat.  These are the two hardest pieces to build for the boat.  The add on price for these two items is $125.  Please contact me if you would like to add these to your kit.  The only pieces not included in the kit as listed are the stringers and rub rails due to shipping issues.  I can make these for you for an additional cost but they will have to be in 3 pieces each with scarf joints to join them together.  I do cut the scarfs for you.  Please contact me if you need these items.

The basic kit is $375 plus shipping.

Remember to contact me and I can add the carlin and coaming to your order if so desired.

While in Mystic, Ct. at the Wooden Boat Family Boat Building School this year Michael Storer and I got to discussing new kits for me to develop and we decided that his Eureka Canoe design would make a nice kit so here it is.

This nice little canoe is 16′ long and easily handles 2 adults with gear.  The seats can also be set up for a single paddler if you prefer.  It is very stable by canoe standards and easy for a first time builder to build from out kit.  All plywood side and bottom panels are cut to exact size so you just glue the joints together to form the length, stitch it all together, and start your epoxy work.  All timbers in the kit are shipped slightly long so that you can trim to exact size on your boat.  The deck and bulkhead plywood are also a small bit oversize to be trimmed to exact size and, in the case of the deck to the style you prefer.  This is a nice boat to build that you can be proud of.  Our kit comes with cypress timbers and marine okuome plywood.  Mahogany spacer blocks like the ones shown here can be included in lieu of cypress if you prefer at no additional cost.

Shipping time typically will be two to three weeks.  We can also provide epoxy and fiberglass kits to your requirements if so desired.

EUREKA CANOE KIT WITH PLANS      $599 PLUS SHIPPING   PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE TO LOWER 48 PLEASE CONTACT US DIRECT TO DISCUSS SHIPPING OPTIONS.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED PLANS FOR THIS ONE NEVER FEAR.  WE CAN ADJUST THE PRICE TO REFLECT THIS.

The Quick Canoe is now ready for you.  This is one of the easiest boats there is to build.  Our kit consists of all the wooden parts you will need to put this together.  All you need is glue, some epoxy, a little fiberglass tape, a few screws, and paint.  We even include the wire ties to keep the bow and stern together while assembling.   The other ingredient is YOU, having a great time on the water in the canoe.  You will need very few tools for this.  A simple handsaw can be used for all cuts necessary although a jig saw is helpful.  A cordless drill would be good but you could do it with a hand screwdriver if necessary.  Duct tape and a few spring clamps will help with assembly.  All parts are labeled so you will know exactly what they are and the labels have dimensions on them just in case a label should come off.  This is the perfect quick and easy family project.  Everybody can help and the kids can tell their friends what they did!!

Now for the technical stuff.  The basic hull comes in two pieces for the bottom and four for the sides.

The gunwales, inwales and keel come in three pieces each.  The center piece of each is scarfed on both ends and the other pieces on one end.  We will include a piece of aluminum angle that will work as a clamping jig for the scarfs.  Be sure and cover this with plastic tape to prevent the wood sticking to the aluminum.  I recommend starting the gluing process early on so that all pieces will be glued by the time you need them for construction into the boat.

The skeg pieces will fit your boat perfectly prior to applying the keel.  After it is all glued up you can cut it to any final shape you would like.  A gentle curve works well.

There are five pieces for each seat.  All except the framing pieces are cut to fit.  The seat supports are ready for the installation of the framing.  No intricate cuts are required.

Believe me.  It doesn’t get any easier than this!!!

BASIC KIT WITH EITHER ULTRAPLY XL OR EXTERIOR PINE Including complete bound set of plans $445 plus shipping

Marine fir, okoume, and miranti also available at additional cost.  I do not believe this should be necessary for this particular boat.

We also have an epoxy and fiberglass kit available for the canoe.  Click here for more information .

Now for the technical stuff.  The basic hull comes in either two or four pieces for the bottom and four for the sides.   A four piece bottom is a little more difficult to build but the shipping cost is considerably less.

The transom and it’s associated framing is all cut with the necessary bevels.  Just the side pieces need to be cut to length.  The bow and transom knees will have to be cut to fit.  This too is a very simple straight cut.

Believe me.  It doesn’t get any easier than this!!!

Beautiful mahogany Sunfish Daggerboard. Brand new! This is a custom made sunfish style daggerboard with feathered edges for improved hydrodynamic flow. This fits the Sunfish and may also fit other similar sailboats. The Daggerboard measures 9.5″ x 45 .5″ x 3/4″ and is made from one piece mahogany.  This board is the exact board currently included by the manufacturer in many of their recreational Sunfish.  I know this because I make them.  It must be held in place with clip, not included, like older boards.  Weighted board available at additional cost.  Contact us for more info.

The blade is finished with 3 coats of Interlux Spar Varnish.

I promise you will like this one.
